Growing Interest in US Physicians Moving in Canada

In the past year, there has been a growing interest from US Physicians in moving and working in Canada. While the US has always been a great source for physicians, according to the MCC (Medical Council of Canada), their numbers have increased since last year. The number of US medical graduates that have set up a physicansapply.ca account has risen by 718% in comparison to last year's figures.

While the increase in the number of doctors could only prove beneficial to the country, this sudden surge is quite intriguing. Why are there so many US doctors applying for Canada? There are multiple factors that caused this sudden exodus.

Easier Application Process
In past years, the application process for doctors has been quite complicated. To the extent that it has become a deterrent for potential physicians in trying out for Canada. A key reason for this interest, is Canada's Health Care System. While efficient, this type of healthcare system has potential doctors go through a stringent process before they could work in Canada.

In recent months though, there have been multiple changes in the application process for physicians. These changes have made the application process and pathway for those practicing medicine more efficient. This is a welcome development because Canada has suffered from a shortage of doctors for years. Many a Canadian could attest to the frustration of the long waitlist for doctors. Some waiting periods for doctor appointments have even lasted for months. This shortage has compelled the Canadian government to implement procedures that make it easier for doctors to work in Canada.

The increase in the number of US doctors could only be considered positive. A fresh new wave of doctors will not only alleviate the shortage of physicians; it will also help with other issues such as the burnout of health care workers and speed up the waiting period for doctor appointments. While doctors will still need to fulfill specific requirements, they are not as stringent compared to other professions. US doctors have even more advantage because there is a close link between the US and Canada's medical education. For example, if a Family Physician has completed their post-graduate training in the US, they are eligible to work in Canada because their credentials are recognized by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CPFC), same applies to Specialists through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Some provinces such as Ontario and Alberta are making it easier to apply for independent licensing by recognizing US credentials, that are on par with Canadian training, do no longer requirement supervision or undertaking the Canadian Medical exams. Although this is exciting and a way forward, it is important to still consider that each province has its own set of requirements for potential doctors to fulfil, and it is always worth investigating before applying.

US Political Landscape
The US political climate has been quite unstable in the past year, and this has left many physicians somewhat disenchanted. The US government's recent changes in government policies and protocols have made physicians apprehensive of their future in the US. Due to these feelings of uncertainty, US doctors are looking for better opportunities, with Canada being the most obvious choice.

Canada shares a border with the US. This means doctors will no longer need to travel continents to relocate. Logistics wise, this is a very big advantage. If they have family members back in the US, they will not have to spend a small fortune just to visit. The political changes have even compelled some Canadian-born doctors who are working in the US, to look for positions back home.

Work Life Balance
The work life balance in the US is often tough for US doctors. The heavy work hours, the need for continued study, and hectic patient care procedures have made it very difficult for doctors throughout the US. The US work culture is very competitive.

In comparison to Canada, the US offers employees far less vacation leaves. There is also the fact that Canada ranks 5th in the world when it comes to work life balance. This has prompted a good number of them to seek greener pastures and look for job postings in Canada, a country known for its adherence to work-life balance.

The "Canadian Lifestyle"
As a culture, Canada has always been more laid back compared to its US neighbor, which could be a contributing factor to why US doctors are moving to the "Great White North." The Canadian lifestyle is often characterized for its sense of community, cultural diversity, and access to outdoor living.

Canada is known for preserving its natural environment. There are around 37 National Parks all over Canada, and they hold a diverse range of flora and fauna, that is unique to Canada. A good number of these parks are also very accessible and can be reached within a short drive. Cost of living in Canada is also quite affordable. In comparison to the US, Canadians generally pays 21.2% less for housing., 25.5 % less for childcare, and 6.2% for groceries.

Immigration
Canada is well-known for its welcoming policies towards immigrants. This is why Canada is considered one of the top countries in the world for immigrants to get citizenship. This is especially true for physicians. As stated earlier, the country has struggled with a shortage of physicians.
Permanent residency or citizenship pathways could be quite difficult for people of all professions. However, the Canadian government has always valued healthcare workers such as Doctors, nurses, and personal support workers. Although doctors will still need to undergo the usual routes for permanent residency and ultimately citizenship, their education and experience are a great advantage.
While US and Canadian relations have been fluctuating in recent months, the two countries are still intrinsically linked. There may be changes in diplomatic relations between the two nations, however, the need for quality doctors will always leave Canada's doors open and welcoming.
