Major Physician Licensure Changes for Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario

Physician Licensure Changes

Great news for qualified and eligible international physicians who wish to work in Canada! Recently, three of Canada's most populous and popular provinces Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario have released licensure changes that will make it easier for qualified and eligible doctors to work and settle in Canada. These changes are part of a wider trend across the country, as provinces look to make physician licensure more accessible and recognize the training and experience of qualified and eligible internationally trained doctors.

What are these changes though? And what do they offer the international doctors who wish to work in Canada?

For qualified and eligible doctors, it has never been a better time to come to Canada. These licensure changes are taking out the cumbersome process of taking examinations, and qualified and eligible doctors can now practice independently without any supervision.

These changes encompass both specialists and family physicians. For specialists, they must be Royal College Eligible and have postgraduate training from specific jurisdictions. These include Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

For Family Physicians, they must be CFPC eligible and have postgraduate training from USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

This is a great opportunity because Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario are amongst the most popular and progressive in Canada, and they each have their advantages to offer any prospective doctor.

  • Alberta is a wonderful combination of natural beauty and economic growth. It is one of Canada's biggest oil and gas providers, which makes it one of the wealthiest provinces in Canada. It is also home to beautiful natural landmarks such as Lake Louise and Jasper National Park.
  • British Columbia offers a balmier climate and boasts one of the most beautiful natural sceneries in the world. There are vibrant cities and coastal towns and family friendly communities, which promote great work-life balance.
  • Ontario is a melting pot of cultures and is a hub for global talents. It is also Canada's most populous province, with over 16 million residents. The province offers opportunities in major cities and smaller communities. There are also many excellent schools, amenities, and family-friendly communities.
