2026 Starts with a bang for international doctors as the Canadian government is updating a new express entry category for foreign doctors already working in Canada.The news was announced Dec 8^th, 2025, and invitations will start in early 2026.

The plan involves updating the express entry route with a new category. The category includes doctors who are currently working in Canada. They must have at least one year of Canadian work experience within the last three years, and currently have a job offer. According to a government statement, the physicians eligible for the program include specialists in surgery, clinical and laboratory medicine and primary care doctors. These new updates were set to help doctors who are already treating patients in the country.

The news was announced by Immigration Minister Lena Diab, who quoted

"Many of these doctors are already treating patients in our communities. We cannot afford to lose them"

In addition to the updates to the Express Entry Category, the Canadian government has also opened 5,000 federal admission spaces.

These new updates coincide with already existing PNP (Provincial Nominee Programs) allocations. Through these updates, provinces and territories will be able to nominate licensed doctors through job offers and gain permanent residency.

On top of the 5,000 federal admission spaces, nominated doctors will also receive an expedited 14-day work permit processing. This will allow doctors to work, gain Canadian work experience and fully integrate into the Canadian Healthcare system while waiting for permanent residency.
