Eligible International Dermatologists: A Solution to the Shortage in Canada?
In the past 2 decades there has been a dramatic shortage of dermatologists in Canada. The issue was first discovered around 18 years ago, back in 2008. Throughout this time, the Dermatologist shortage has become even worse. In recent surveys there are approximately 800 Dermatologists within the country. This means that there is at most 1 Dermatologist for every 50,000 Canadians. Due to the shortage of Dermatologists, the increase of dangerous diseases such as Melanoma has continued to increase. The long waiting periods have made it more difficult to spot skin diseases earlier.
This shortage is most evident in densely populated areas such as Toronto. While there are dermatologist clinics within the GTA, they are still very undermanned. Many a Torontonian has had to wait for hours in line just to have a quick check up. There are just not enough Dermatologists to handle the need. The shortage is even more drastic in the more remote parts of the country. Some patients would need to drive hours to the nearest city just to see a Dermatologist only to have to wait for hours more in line.
Some Northern Ontario patients have even resorted to going to online dermatology clinics for an examination. While online check-ups can provide some basic consultation for minor skin diseases, a more thorough examination necessary for severe skin diseases such as Melanoma or Skin Cancer. With these diseases, time is of the essence.
Another key issue is the aging of the current population of Dermatologists. Around 50% of the Physicians are over 55 and nearing retirement age. What's more, a good number of incoming dermatologists are going into more lucrative business practices such as offering cosmetic services rather than medical dermatology.
To circumvent these issues, the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) has unveiled the More Than Skin Deep platform paper. The paper acts as a detailed roadmap to actionable solutions to the Dermatology shortage. The platform outlines key strategies that will strengthen Dermatology care within the country. Amongst these solutions is the increase of internationally trained Dermatologists in Canada.
According to the paper, from an international standpoint, streamlining the credential recognition process for internationally trained dermatologists will simplify their path to practicing in Canada. This will also help alleviate the growing demand for Dermatological care. Apart from simplifying the process, the paper also espouses a strong support system that will help internationally trained Dermatologists to integrate into the Canadian Health care system. It will also ensure that they will feel welcome in their new working environment.
Conclusion
While the Dermatologist shortage in Canada is a larger issue and will need to be addressed with more attention, the increase of internationally trained Dermatologists will undoubtedly contribute to solving the Dermatology shortage in the country. This has led to many Canadian clinics to hire eligible international Dermatologists.
