Is MRCGP recognised in Canada?

MRCGP recognised in Canada

Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) is the postgraduate medical qualification required to attain a certificate of completion of training (CCT) in General Practice in the United Kingdom. But what about Canada? Is MRCGP recognised in Canada?

If you're a doctor in the UK considering a move to Canada, you may be wondering if your MRCGP qualification will be recognised. The good news is that MRCGP is recognised in Canada. In fact, UK trained MRCGP General Practitioners have been benefiting from a more streamlined licensing process when applying to work in Canada. This is based on recognition of training.

There are a few things to keep in mind when considering moving to Canada to practice. For one, each province has different routes to licensure. Having MRCGP is just one step in the process to becoming licenced in Canada. International medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to practice medicine in Canada must meet certain criteria including having a medical degree that is recognised in Canada, and having your qualifications verified by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC).

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) plays an important role in the assessment of physicians in Canada. The MCC's recognition stands as an important acknowledgement of the level of expertise and training requirements used in both countries. It also speaks to the high standards that are set when it comes to ensuring patient safety and quality care. The (MCC) does not grant licences to physicians. That is the responsibility of the provincial and territorial Medical Regulatory Authorities.

The MCC has recognized the UK's General Medical Council's (GMC) registration process since 1997. This reciprocal recognition has enabled Canadian-trained and qualified physicians to apply for registration with the GMC and practice as a doctor in the United Kingdom. Through this mutual recognition, UK doctors have been able to practice such specialties as family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, anesthesia and pediatrics in Canadian healthcare settings. While meeting these requirements is rigorous, it represents an incredibly valuable opportunity for internationally trained physicians to establish their careers in established medical systems abroad.
