Physicians for You’s CEO and Founder: Phil Martin

Phil-Martin
Canada is considered one of the top countries in the world when it comes to standard of living. It is a country that balances natural beauty, progressive policies, and welcoming people. This is the country that Physicians for You's CEO and founder Phil Martin moved to back in 2010 and proudly calls home. He currently lives in Vernon with his wife and child, which is based in the North Okanagan and 5 hours east of Vancouver. It's one of the most amazing tourist destinations in Canada full of mountains, lakes, beaches and wineries.

Originally from Southampton in the UK, Phil moved to Canada for work. He has had a very colorful career through the years. While his focus has always been sales and recruitment, he has also worked in real estate, technology, and the music industry running his own record label and DJing globally. His hobbies include mountain biking, skiing, yoga, music, travelling, and anything outdoors and fun, so Canada has been an absolute paradise for him.

Before moving to Canada, Phil worked for a global physician recruitment company in the UK, his company believed he was the perfect person to set up a branch in Canada. Upon moving to Canada, he was enamored by its striking natural beauty and the more laid-back way of living. He also noticed that the healthcare system was not perfect. Getting an appointment with a family physician or specialist took a long time, and it was also very difficult for doctors to relocate to Canada because of the complicated licensure process. It was even more difficult for remote areas, and many Canadians would have to travel far to get medical attention.

Phil worked with the company for six years in Canada until his head office decided the Canadian recruitment process was too stringent and decided to focus their efforts elsewhere. This gave Phil the opportunity to set up his own company, Physicians for You, which he did with much excitement and anticipation. It would be a company that would help physicians throughout every part of the process. A company that would provide physicians to every part of Canada and ultimately alleviate the lack of physicians.

On this vision, Phil had this to say;
"Canada was in dire need of physicians, and I truly wanted to do all I could to help. Third- party physician recruitment is very common in the UK and Australia, where I have worked previously, but never in Canada and I wanted to change that. Canadians are the most friendly, lovely, and welcoming people I have ever met (and I have lived and travelled all around the world) and they deserve a first-class health care system, and for that to happen they need lots of doctors!"

While the journey of setting up Physicians for You was fulfilling, it was also one of the most difficult endeavors he has ever taken.

According to Phil;
"Starting Physicians for You was incredibly hard, I nearly gave up several times. As we work for free and only get paid on successful placements, funding the business was very tough at the beginning. Plus understanding all the complexities of licensure in Canada. Every province is different, so it was like working in several countries, rather than just one (I always describe Canada like the European Union). Also, when first starting you need jobs to entice physicians to work with you, and you need physicians for medical facilities to give you jobs to fill. I would say the first few years of getting Physicians for You up and running was one of the toughest in my life, working 15 hours a day/7 days a week and doing all I could to get it set up and make it successful".

While it was an uphill battle, Phil had years of sales experience, and an uncanny determination to draw from. His favorite quotes totally encapsulate his philosophy towards the physician recruitment process. These quotes being "Fail early, fail often, and fail forward" from John C. Maxwell, and "Do not pray for an easy life. Pray for the strength to endure a difficult one" from Bruce Lee.

After years of 15-hour workdays and sacrifice, Phil has achieved what he set out to do. Physicians for You is now one of the top physician recruitment companies in the country and has helped thousands of physicians find jobs and achieve their own versions of the Canadian dream. In addition to helping lots of medical facilities across Canada secure the physicians they require and giving the Canadian people the healthcare they truly deserve.

Despite his success, Phil knows that there is so much more that can be done to make the physician recruitment process much more efficient. His goal is to make Physicians for You, THE company every physician wants to work with when looking for work in Canada, and THE company that every medical facility contacts when looking for physicians.

On a personal note, he has this to say;
"My goal for 2026 is to get a better work/life balance so I can spend more time with my beautiful family (our daughter is growing up fast). Once I have achieved all my goals in business and truly taken over Canada, I would like to become a yoga/pilates instructor and start producing dance music, these have been personal passions of mine for a long time."

"I also promised myself a trip to Mount Everest base camp for my 50th birthday, so I have 3 years to go and will need to start planning soon! Life is short and I really want to enjoy, embrace, and experience as much of it as I can. Focusing on making memories, not collecting things. Thats what matters."
