Spring Cleaning
Enjoy Nature in all its glory
Spring is the time when snow thaws and plants come into bloom. Canada has one of the most diverse kinds of flora and fauna. During spring, grass that has been dormant for months starts to sprout, and flowers bloom.
It is also a time when animals come out of their shelters to bask in the sunlight and gather food. Squirrels and racoons come out of their woodland homes to forage nuts and roots. In the more isolated areas, the iconic moose and beavers of the Canadian woods become more active, and grizzly bears come out of hibernation. If you want to see Canada in all its natural beauty, spring is the perfect time.
Try spring activities
One of the most limiting factors of wintertime is the difficulty of getting physical activity. While there are great winter activities to enjoy during wintertime, the necessity to bundle up against the cold can be a lot of work. With the coming of spring, you can be more carefree with your attire. You won't have to wear snowshoes or a winter coat.
You will also get to partake in many great spring activities such as hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. These activities allow you to enjoy physical activities while enjoying the beauty of Canada.
Please be very careful if you do go wildlife watching, as there are animals that are very territorial during these times. Grizzly bears and moose are some of the most dangerous animals in the wild. Grizzlies hibernate during wintertime, and when they do wake up during springtime, they are ravenous after months of sleeping. They would have already burned through their fat storage and needed food.
The same goes for moose. These huge members of the deer family are usually very austere and gentle. However, they could also be very aggressive if they feel threatened. They also have a habit of crossing main roads, and can be hazardous for both themselves and passing cars. If you are going to walk through the Canadian woods, please be prepared and aware of your surroundings.
Be aware of spring allergies
While spring is a wonderful time of the year, where the local fauna starts to grow and bloom, it is also the time for spring allergies. Due to the large amounts of pollen floating in the air, you may get allergies.
This is especially true if you just moved to Canada, and you have yet to get full immunity or at least know to avoid specific plants that have this kind of pollen. The same goes for specific mold spores or insect bites that you may be allergic to. If you are going outdoors for a hike, please be aware of your spring allergies and bring anti-allergy medications just to be safe.
Partake of spring festivals
Springtime has always been a time of celebration. It is the time directly after winter and people can at last enjoy sunny skies and warm weather. You no longer have to deal with cold weather or winter chores. It is also time for spring festivals.
Throughout Canada, there are many festivals that you can take part in. Festivals such as the Canadian Tulip festival of Ottawa and the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival are just some of the great festivals that take place throughout the country. These many festivals are not only a celebration of springtime, but cultural diversity, the arts and cuisine as well.
