The Canadian healthcare system has been under great strain the past few decades. This is most evident in the rural areas of the country.

Many a Canadian has had to wait for months just to get a doctor's appointment. To combat this, many Canadian provinces have implemented changes to their healthcare policies.

Just recently, the B.C. government has agreed with the province's doctor's association in a four-year extension for a labor deal. While the deal has not officially been released, it is currently known as the Physician Main Agreement and is designed to strengthen patient care and ensure that doctors are supported while also respecting the government's bargaining mandate.

According to Doctors of B.C President Dr. Adam Thompson:

"Our health-care system is under enormous strain, and this agreement will help support doctors in delivering the best possible care."

The agreement's highlights include the following:

  • Doctors will be eligible for an increase in after-hours compensation premiums.
  • Increased funding for Family Doctors in rural and remote communities. This includes a dedicated contract rate and features an increase in compensation for maternity care.
  • The renewed agreement will also provide dedicated funding to income disparities and gender inequality amongst doctors and also across services provided to patients.
  • Contract rates will increase for doctors who provide Pediatric, Obstetrical and Gynecological and forensic and psychiatric services.
  • Compensation will also increase for on-call doctors, along with a new premium for elective surgeries during evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • More than $1 billion in support for patient care and doctor throughout its four-year span. Another $100 million will also be dedicated to addressing the workload increases of contracted doctors.
