Throughout Canada, there is a great need for doctors of all specialties. This is evident in Alberta where clinics and hospitals alike struggle to hire and retain doctors. Even more so, in the rural towns and small cities in Alberta. Many an Albertan who lives in more remote areas has had to drive for hours to go to the nearest clinic or hospital. Fortunately, the Alberta government has set in place key plans and resources to combat these shortages.
Last February 24th, 2026, Finance Minister Nate Horner unveiled the 2026 Alberta Health budget, and it looks very promising. So promising that it has reached a record of $34.4 billion.
Here are some of the most notable takeaways from this huge Alberta budget:
- $7.7 billion was invested in physician funding to ensure Alberta remains competitive. This includes a 22% ($1.4 billion) year-over-year jump and $450 million solely dedicated to retention and recruitment programs.
- The largest allocation by far though, is $13.8 billion which is to go towards the expansion and operating budget of surgical services and hospitals in Alberta.
- There is also new targeted funding for expanding Alberta's surgical capacity. $525 million is targeted to complete 50,000 additional surgery procedures over a span of 3 years through chartered surgical facilities. Chartered surgical facilities are private surgical centers and are meant to provide uninsured and insured surgical treatments throughout Alberta.
- $12.7 billion of the 2026 budget will go to Primary and Preventive Health Services. $2 billion will go to Mental Health and Addiction, and $5.9 billion will go to Assisted Living and Social Services.
- $9 million will also go to attracting and retaining rural healthcare professionals.
"A growing and aging population has put increased pressure on our healthcare system, and this budget focuses on what matters most, quality care, certainty and support for families," said Minister Horner.
With this huge allocation of funds by the Alberta government for improved healthcare, it is definitely a great start for addressing the shortage of physicians in the province. It is also a great opportunity for qualified internationally trained doctors to work in Alberta. The need is there as well as government support.
